Dregs of the Year Nominee

Howard Kurtz gets it (is he with CNN or Fix Noise this week?) for attacking Stephen Colbert for Colbert’s bit attacking Kurtz for asking questions about Hillary Clinton’s age here (everybody got that?).

And I LOVE Kurtz’s line about how it’s supposedly about time that somebody took on Stephen Colbert, or something.

Memo to Howie: Stephen Colbert is A COMEDIAN, an intentional one, as opposed to the unintentional one that you actually are. And who was it who appointed Kurtz as some kind of supposed “media watchdog” anyway?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

Dregs of the Year Nominees

The 7 alleged “Democrats” in the U.S. Senate who opposed the nomination by President Obama of Debo Adegbile to head the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department, including Chris Coons of Delaware and “Sideshow Bob” Casey of PA (here)

Dregs of the Year Nominee

John Scott of Fix Noise, for plummeting to new depths even for that wretched network by saying that, well, gosh, all Lois Lerner of the IRS has to do is answer those ridiculous questions from Darrell Issa of the House Oversight Committee, and then maybe the death threats against Lerner would stop…of course, not a word of rebuke for those threatening violence against Lerner – what a pestilence Scott and his ilk are (here)

Dregs of the Year Nominees

The 50 or so bystanders on a Greenwich Village subway station platform who, by all accounts, did nothing while J.P. Masterson was being punched in the face by a “man” who screamed “I f#@cking hate faggots!,” all because Masterson held hands with his partner while they both celebrated their 10th anniversary (here)…

“I have multiple fractures in my face, eye socket and nose,” Masterson said. “I can’t really breathe because my nose is off center.”

U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!…

Do-Gooder of the Year Nominee

I never imagined that I would ever give a citation like this to David Brooks of the New York Times, but in March, he wrote eloquently here about the evil of torture by solitary confinement; credit where it’s due indeed (h/t Atrios)

Dregs of the Year Nominees

General Motors gets a dishonorable note for knowing about a safety defect in the now-discontinued Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 models (the model dates are from ’03 to ’07) that could cause the vehicles to stall or fail to deploy their air bags, but waiting until February of this year to recall 1.6 million affected vehicles because of faulty ignition switches linked to 13 deaths (another reason to buy a Honda as far as I’m concerned – here).

Do-Gooder of the Year Nominee

Kentucky AG Jack Conway gets an “attaboy” here for deciding not to defend his state’s gay marriage ban (did I mention that Conway has gubernatorial ambitions and is a practicing Catholic?).

And to think, voters in that commonwealth (and yes, it is that) actually voted for Rand “Aqua Buddha” Paul over this guy for the U.S. Senate…

Dregs of the Year Nominee

That supposedly fine, upstanding Christian man Mr.-Puppy-Dog-Eyes-With-The-Shiv for uttering these truly repulsive racist sentiments here (somewhere, Bull Connor and Sheriff Clark are smiling…and kudos to Dem U.S. House Rep Barbara Lee for calling him on it)

Dregs of the Year Nominees (“Nothin’ To Lose” Citation)

Paul Stanley of Kiss, for whining that the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame would induct the band with only its original members, not including two musicians who joined the band later, Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer (here)…

And get a load of this for a rationalization…

“In the Grateful Dead’s case, (they) also inducted a writer who never played an instrument,” said Stanley, referring to Robert Hunter’s inclusion when the band was inducted in 1994…”

Is Stanley kidding? Robert Hunter is a legendary lyricist who collaborated with Jerry Garcia on tunes like “Friend of the Devil,” and “Truckin’”. But as far as Stanley is concerned, Hunter isn’t a real band member, or something…

Hmm. Let’s see know…Hall and Oates, Bon Jovi, The Cure, The Moody Blues, Jethro Tull…what do they all have in common?

To date, they have been passed over for induction in the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame.

And Kiss got in, and Stanley is still complaining, which I guess is to be expected for someone who’s earned a nice living while playing the most formulaic type of rock n’ roll music imaginable.

Do-Gooder of the Year Nominees

Sam Adams Beer and Heineken for this

Dregs of the Year Nominee

Reed Hastings, owner of Netflix, gets a raspberry for criticizing public schools (typical) because they’re controlled by democratically elected school boards, while extolling charter schools because the people who run them aren’t elected by or accountable to just about anyone here (h/t Atrios).

I don’t know about you, but I’ve just about had it with rich people passing judgment on those who are not as well off as they are, thinking they have the answers for those who are less fortunate. Just be honest and say that you don’t give a shit, and here is what I think instead, OK?

Dregs of the Year Nominee

“Governor Bully” again for blocking the Tesla automaker from selling cars in the Garden State, as noted here (yep, just grovel a little more for the Kochs in the utterly vain hope that you’ll win the Republican presidential nomination in 2016…too funny)…

Do-Gooder of the Year Nominee

Wisconsin State Senator (and a Republican – HORRORS!) Dale Schultz for calling BS on his political party over its voter suppression efforts in that state in particular, though you could easily do that over what is going on all over the country (here – kudos)

Journamalism Citation Of The Year Nominee (Sports Division)

Yes, I can’t stand Ed Snider because he’s a warmonger who will probably end up skating (no pun intended) over Iraq, but fair is fair…in March, on the day after the Flyers (his team of course) defeated the St. Louis Blues, the leading team in the Western Division (I think that’s what it’s called) for the Flyers’ fifth win in a row, that didn’t even make the front page of the Bucks County Courier Times sports section – it was bumped instead by news of a loss of the Archbishop Wood Vikings’ girls basketball team in the state final and a column about a rumored trade of the Eagles’ DeSean Jackson (Jackson was later released and signed with Washington).

Dregs of the Year Nominee

30-year-old Nicholas Tognozzi of Santa Rosa, CA, who (allegedly, let’s not forget – awful story here) rammed his pickup truck into the back of a Toyota Camry, crushing the back seat passengers to death…Jay Hufford was the driver of the Camry, and the two people killed were his wife, Sue, and his mother, Sharon – Hufford’a father was in the front seat and was apparently not hurt…

“He was looking down at his phone,” said CHP Sgt. Erik Egide. “He was looking down at his phone. He may have been texting, that’s still being investigated.” Asked about Tognozzi’s degree of impairment, Egide said “It’s difficult to know with marijuana until we get results of the chemical test.”

So texting AND toking, huh (once more, allegedly)?

There are all kinds of bad drivers out there on the road. In my experience such as it is, pickup truck drivers are the very worst (and yes, I’m sure there are plenty of good ones). Just about ALWAYS tailgating or clogging up a lane while they have a cell phone chat with a buddy.

If this guy is found guilty (and it turns out that he was on drugs too), then he should go to jail for the rest of his life.

Dregs of the Year Nominee

And sticking with the subject of bad driving, I give you the case of Jeffrey White, who “aggressively tailgated” driver Tracey Sloan, passed her, flipped her the bird…and then proceeded to drive his vehicle into a utility pole – Sloan apparently drove past White and laughed at him after the accident, which is completely appropriate as far as I’m concerned (here).

White left the scene, but Sloan turned the phone recording into police, who apprehended White later (and yes, it’s not the best practice to be messing around with either a flip phone or a “smart” one when driving, but I think this qualifies as an exception to that rule).

And yes, White was driving a pickup truck.

Dregs of the Year Nominees

The Texas Rangers baseball team fans responsible for this atrocity (i.e., the monument honoring 18-year-firefighter Shannon Stone, who fell to his death trying to catch a ball tossed to him from outfielder Josh Hamilton I believe, was littered with drink cans and other trash on Opening Day)

Dregs of the Year Nominees

Time to cite the High Court of Hangin’ Judge JR again for yet another assault on campaign finance law in April where they removed personal overall limits on campaign contributions in McCutcheon v. FEC; it would have been appropriate if they’d issued this on April Fools Day, but it was the 2nd instead (here and here).

Dregs of the Year Nominees

As far as I’m concerned, the local sports media in these parts don’t have bragging rights over anyone for a variety of reasons, but in April, Mike Francesa and Boomer Esaison, among other “sports mouths” in NYC, really showed themselves to be troglodytes when Dan Murphy of the New York Mets (commendably, IMHO) decided to invoke parental leave at the beginning of the baseball season so he could be with his wife, who had just given birth to their child (and OF COURSE that total worm Craig Carton, he who once “reported” that former Flyer Eric Lindros was pals with “reputed” mobster Joey Merlino, is involved too). And basically, Francesa & Co. lost it, saying more or less that all men should follow their lead and tell the mother to suck it up or get help elsewhere, or something – actually, they should do more of what Murphy did and tune out the other clowns involved here (Esiason said that the mother should have gotten a “C” section, as if that has anything to do with family leave…he later apologized).

Dregs of the Year Nominee

You can give a citation like this to “Governor Bully” almost on a weekly basis considering all of the drip-drip-drip coverage of the George Washington Bridge scandal (and rightly so), but here, I guess he got a little fed up with the treatment he was receiving at a celebrity roast for former Gov. Brendan Byrne, and he crowded comedian Joy Behar and apparently tried to take her notes away from her.

What a pathetic creature Chris Christie is, my fellow prisoners, firmly standing up to the apparent threat of a woman who was in the process of calling him out for what he truly is.

Dregs of the Year Nominee

Edmond Aviv, 62, who was convicted of harassing his neighbor in the Cleveland suburb of South Euclid for more than a decade (here), as well as her disabled children – nice bleeping guy – (and a Do-Gooder citation to Judge Gayle Williams-Byers who made Aviv wear a sign in public saying “I AM A BULLY” as part of his punishment)…

Do-Gooder of the Year Nominee

Pastor Rick Wood of The Lord’s House of Prayer in Oneonta, Alabama, set out to feed the poor in his neighborhood (last I checked, The Bible had something to say about that), but was stopped by the local police in Birmingham because Wood didn’t have a $500 permit (and by the way, a Dregs citation goes out not to the police, who are only doing their jobs, but any of the idiot politicians responsible for getting that stupid ordinance passed – here).

Dregs of the Year Nominee

Would-be Caramel County, CA homeowner Kathy Rowe, who was so furious on losing out on her home bid here to another woman that she took out an ad telling people to rape the new owner (oy)…

Do-Gooder of the Year Nominee

Dem Governor Martin O’Malley of Maryland here, for signing a bill decriminalizing pot possession in his state (Now THAT is what I’m talking about, people! And I’m still a bit squeamish on the legalization by the way, though I once was on gay marriage too)

More later…
